Auto policies can be a little confusing.  They are made up of several parts, some are required by state law while other parts are optional. Some parts are designed to cover you, some are for the other parties involved.

In the state of Missouri, you can have your license taken away for not having the basic minimum auto coverage!

All policies have to have the following:
Liability – protects you if an injured party decides to sue you
Collision Coverage – protects your vehicle if it is damaged in an accident whether you caused it or someone else did.
comprehensive coverage – protects the vehicle in the event that something other than an accident caused damage such as; fire, hail, vandalism, theft, etc..
Uninsured Motorist Coverage – cover you and your passengers in the event that someone causes an accident that doesn’t have coverage.

Optional, but recommended parts are:
Underinsured Motorist Coverage – covers you and your passengers in the event that someone has insurance but it isn’t enough to cover the whole event.
Medical Payments Coverage – covers you, passengers or even someone someone sitting on the tailgate of a truck and falls off.  No one has to be “At Fault”.
Rental Reimbursement Coverage – this covers a replacement vehicle if you car is not functional and needs to be fixed.
Towing / Roadside Assistance Coverage – comes in handy if you have a mechanical failure, run out of gas, lock yourself out, etc…

Talk with your insurance agent to make sure you have all the coverage you think you have.  It is a good idea to review your policies from time to time.
